Yesterdays AdAge had an interesting Op-Ed piece by Jeff Goodby (Goodby, Silverstien & Partners), where he discusses the validity of doing work just to win awards. “If we don’t reward work consumers have actually seen, we risk becoming irrelevant” is the headline and really sums up his thoughts. My thoughts are in a similar vein, but with some differences. Read More-->.

Yes, it’s the obligatory Michael Jackson post. But after the wild week we just had, it seems appropriate to take a moment and figure out what it all means (especially in digital terms).
The Zemoga team spent part of last week with Peter Shankman, founder of HARO (HELP A REPORTER OUT). HARO is a brilliant idea, an online community/mailing list/network that puts reporters in direct contact with sources (Peter currently has over 50,000 sources subscribing to his thrice daily e-mail newsletter). Peter is a former journalist/PR guy and he walks the walk when it comes to reporting in the digital age. During his trip to Bogota he was constantly Tweeting, uploading pictures via TwitPic and planning future blog posts (all while continuing to take care of HARO and his other social media consulting duties). News was released yesterday that the iPhone 3G S sold over a million units over its first week of availability. That’s a hell of a number (especially on top of the 40 million+ iPhone and iPhone Touches Apple has sold to date.
That number does beg further questions as well. How many of those million units were sold to existing iPhone customers (i.e. upgrades)? How many were sold to existing AT & T customers? And how many were brand new users? Whatever the answers to those questions, the ability of Apple to generate at least $200 million in gross retail sales (based on the lowest 3G S price point of $199) is quite a feat in our current economic climate. All of us have personal opinions about the design of everyday items like clothes, cars and personal accessories like jewelry, watches and cell phones. Just as these items carry certain types of personality and appeal, web site design and interaction targets the same type of consumer perceptions. Read More-->.

We’re just back from this year’s Internet Retailer Conference, which featured a keynote address (with the title mentioned above) by Overstock.com CEO Patrick Byrne. A colorful and engaging speaker, Byrne is a regular guest on many business news networks. When one reporter asked him if he felt bad about having a business model that took advantage of other people’s mistakes and misfortunes, Byrne quoted his mentor (and former employer) Warren Buffett, “If you can’t kick a man when he’s down, when are you going to kick him?” Read More-->

One of the biggest emerging trends in communications is the prevalence of storytelling. Chris Brogan will tell you that social media is storytelling (and relationships). Everyone from Al Ries to Steve Jobs will tell you that marketing is storytelling. So it should come as no surprise that leading digital thinkers believe web design (and really any type of visual communication) is storytelling as well. Read More-->.

A site we check out frequently is TheFWA, while reviewing their post yesterday I saw an amazing post for the agency Boone Oakley’s site. What makes this different than most posts from FWA is that it’s a YouTube video. That’s right… the entire site is a YouTube video. Read More-->.
